Sara Wurfel

Chief Communications and Marketing Officer

(517) 371-7655

As chief communications and marketing officer, Sara leads the MI Chamber’s public relations and strategic communications efforts to help tell the story of Michigan businesses.

Prior to joining the MI Chamber, Sara spearheaded the issue management and crisis communication services of Truscott Rossman, a top full-service agency representing local, statewide and national clients. Prior to her work at the agency, she served as press secretary and spokeswoman for Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder for the first five years of his tenure, working extensively on issues ranging from Detroit’s financial crisis and recovery to the state’s health care reform and access plan — Healthy Michigan — and the deal to get a new bridge to Canada. The Upper Peninsula native also spent six years in the Pacific Northwest managing communications and public affairs activities for a nonprofit advocacy organization and a regional hospital and health system. She’s also served as communications lead for a state agency, a Mid-Michigan Member of Congress and the Michigan House of Representative as well as been an on-loan public information officer for national emergency response efforts during multiple natural disasters.

Sara holds a B.A. in journalism from Michigan State University and an M.S. in strategic communications from the University of Oregon. She is also a nationally-accredited public relations counselor (APR).

She serves on numerous committees and boards, including Habitat for Humanity Capital Region, the Michigan Press Association Foundation, the Michigan Political Leadership Program — a multi-partisan public policy leadership program — and is a frequent school volunteer. Sara also guest lectures on communications, media and public relations issues and practices.

Sara’s favorite part about working at the MI Chamber being a part of a member- and mission-focused organization committed to bipartisan, pragmatic problem solving and helping showcase the key role Michigan businesses play in building strong, thriving communities and economic opportunity for all.
