Youth Employment Opportunities Spur Business Training

Advocacy News – May 4, 2022

Now that high schoolers are winding up the year and preparing for final examinations, Michigan employers are looking to hire interested teens. There are different requirements and expectations when it comes to a business employing youth, and as such, the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) Wage and Hour Division is hosting an informational webinar Thursday, May 12 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The webinar, promoted as the “Youth Employment Webinar and Q&A,” will cover a variety of topics, from work permits and hour limitations, to minimum wage and tips. Whether you are part of a business looking into this influx of staff or a parent wondering what your child’s options will entail, you are encouraged to enter into this discussion and submit questions.

You can read more about the Youth Employment Standards Act (YESA), its history and what the legislation means for youth employees here. On Tuesday, you can use this link to join the webinar.

We hope summer staff additions will benefit and assist tourism efforts in your corner of Michigan.
