MI Cannabis Regulatory Agency Member Roundtable Recap

Advocacy News – Jan. 12, 2023

This week, Michigan Chamber members had the opportunity to meet with the Executive Director of Michigan’s Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA), Brian Hanna, for an extensive overview and open conversation regarding what the agency’s work, what the new legislative term may have in store on the cannabis front and to share feedback.

Director Hanna, formally interim director after replacing Andrew Brisbo last year, has an extensive history in Michigan’s executive departments including a previous tenure in the CRA, as well as the Michigan State Police (MSP). Hanna came into the CRA determined to address Michigan’s enforcement issues within the cannabis industry. The agency plans to continue these efforts into the 2023-2024 legislative cycle with specific emphasis on the illicit market and subsequent products.

Regarding a moratorium, Director Hanna indicated to Michigan Chamber members that the CRA will look toward the state legislature to determine if any kind of moratorium will be implemented in the Great Lakes State, but the executive department will help bring stakeholders and industry experts to the table should the topic be introduced.
