Trade talks: What the USMCA review means for Michigan

Advocacy News – June 11, 2026

What’s happening: With the 2026 review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) approaching, the Michigan Chamber is hosting a virtual briefing June 23, from 11 a.m. to noon to help employers understand what may be ahead for trade, tariffs, supply chains and competitiveness.

Why it matters: Michigan’s economy is deeply connected to North American trade. From manufacturing and agriculture to logistics and professional services, businesses across the state depend on the seamless movement of goods, services and investment across the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

  • The review also comes amid ongoing trade discussions and uncertainty surrounding the future direction of trade policy, making it especially important for employers to stay informed.

The big picture: The future of North American trade is being shaped in real time. Earlier this year, the Michigan Chamber convened business and government leaders from Michigan and Ontario to discuss shared economic priorities, supply chains and regional competitiveness.

  • The new Gordie Howe International Bridge between Detroit and Windsor is also preparing to open, creating a major new gateway between Michigan and Canada. The approximately $4.7 billion crossing has been described as one of the largest and most ambitious bi-national infrastructure projects and will strengthen a critical trade corridor.

What we’re asking: As the USMCA review approaches, we want to hear directly from Michigan employers. What questions do you have? What trade-related challenges or opportunities are most important to your business? Take our brief survey to help shape the conversation and ensure we address the issues that matter most to Michigan’s business community.

Join us: During our June 23 virtual briefing, experts – including Isabelle Icso, executive director of international policy for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce – will examine the upcoming USMCA review, discuss potential scenarios and policy developments, and explore what they could mean for Michigan employers and the state’s long-term competitiveness.
