The Value of Belonging at Work; June DEI Series Tackles This Fundamental Issue

Advocacy News – May 26, 2022

With more focus and spending than ever on developing meaningful diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, companies and organizations are realizing that fostering a true sense of belonging is often the missing ingredient.

Let’s take a look at the numbers. The latest EY “Belonging Barometer” study shows that 40% of employees report feeling isolated at work, which clearly results in lower organizational commitment and engagement. That’s despite the $8 billion being spent on DEI trainings each year.

So what’s happening and why are we missing the mark?

Research shows that a lack of belonging revolves around concepts of mattering, identification and social connection – essentially about being accepted and included. When that’s missing, job performance isn’t great, turnover is higher and sick days increase.

And what can companies and organizations do, especially with today’s workforce shortages?

Join us and several Michigan business leaders from a wide variety of perspectives and experiences – including those from the LGBTQ+ community and who span generations – for our free virtual event at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, June 14, 2022!

We’ll cover what a more inclusive work environment looks and feels like and discuss top strategies that have worked or are key to building a culture that sticks – one where being our authentic self at work is celebrated and helps attract and retain talent and strengthens the bottom line.

Check out this brief video from Trevor Thomas, executive director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Consumers Energy and co-chair of Fair and Equal Michigan, to learn more. And register today!
