Takeaways from Michigan ATHENA’s “Authentic Leadership: Illuminating Your Identity”

Michigan ATHENA’s second virtual event of 2024 brought together an impressive panel of women to discuss how to lead with confidence and align your personality to compliment leadership traits. The panel included:

  • Mara MacDonald – reporter WDIV-TV 4
  • Maggie Pallone – SVP and shareholder, Public Sector Consultants
  • Andie Poole, APR – partner, Martin Waymire
  • Brandalynn Winchester-Middlebrook – EVP, chief people and purpose officer, Lake Trust Credit Union

Here are the top takeaways from the event:

  • Lead by example. Ask yourself what qualities you look for in a leader. Never ask someone to do something you wouldn’t do yourself.
  • Hone the “balancing act”. It’s a hard balance to find when it comes to being a person’s boss and their friend. Remember that you can be a strong leader, and still meet people with empathy and kindness.
  • Leadership skills can be nurtured. Each person brings different strengths to the workplace. Take an active role and invest in individuals you think can become a great leader based on their personality traits.
  • Choose your battles. Conflict is unavoidable, but it’s key to understand the impact of the issues to know if it is worth addressing. Is the issue affecting your mission? The organization’s core values?
  • Strive for fulfillment. It’s important to love what you do. When you feel fulfilled by your job, you bring your best self to the workplace.
