Small Business, Large Impact

Advocacy News – May 6, 2022

For more than five decades, the first week in May has been a time to celebrate National Small Business Week, recognizing the countless contributions of our state and country’s entrepreneurs and small businesses.

The U.S. Small Business Administration counts Michigan as home to more than 902,000 small businesses (defined as those with fewer than 500 employees) who employ nearly 2 million Michiganders. That’s a mighty big impact and representative of why small business is such an economic driver across the state, bolstering all 83 counties.

Did You Know? More than 90 percent of Michigan Chamber members fit this category of small businesses.

Member Spotlight – Nelson Paint Company

One of those small businesses is third generation family-owned manufacturer, Nelson Paint Company, located in Kingsford, a central Upper Peninsula community of around 5,000 residents.

For more than 80 years, Nelson Paint has been continuously innovating in the paint industry, growing into a global leader and authority on marking paints and products used in numerous household and commercial endeavors and in several industries – from forestry to agriculture.

In fact, this UP company was the inventor of the encapsulated, washable paintball and the CO2-powered markers that fire them!

Nelson Paint consistently gets high marks for their top-notch quality and customer service along with their ongoing innovation.

This week and throughout the year, we salute Nelson Paint Company and all our other small businesses for their many contributions to our communities and state.
