Proposal 1: Unlikely allies, shared concerns about Michigan’s future

Advocacy News – Oct. 22, 2026

What’s happening: With Election Day less than two weeks away, the Michigan Chamber and a broad coalition are again sounding the alarm about Proposal 1 – and new polling suggests Michigan voters are listening.

  • At an Oct. 22 virtual news conference, the Michigan Chamber joined the Michigan Education Association, ACLU of Michigan and Citizens for Traditional Values of Michigan to highlight the potential risks of a constitutional convention, or “Con-Con.” The groups often don’t agree, but they share a concern: Opening Michigan’s Constitution to a sweeping rewrite could create years of uncertainty and distract from the challenges facing our state.

By the numbers: A new statewide poll commissioned by Protect MI Constitution from Special Interests found 61% of likely voters oppose Proposal 1, compared with 22% who support it. Yet 62% say they haven’t recently seen or heard information about the proposal – underscoring the need for ongoing voter awareness and education ahead of Nov. 3.

Why it matters: Michigan needs meaningful progress on affordability, education outcomes, workforce challenges and economic competitiveness. A constitutional convention could reopen fundamental questions about taxes, individual rights, school funding and how state government operates.

For employers, that means potentially prolonged uncertainty around the policies that influence investment, hiring and growth. For Michigan families and communities, the stakes are equally high.

The Chamber’s view: Michigan needs greater stability, collaboration and a renewed focus on solving problems – not a costly, unpredictable constitutional rewrite. That’s why the Michigan Chamber urges a NO vote on Proposal 1.
