Price control board for prescription drugs passes the MI Senate

Advocacy News – April 24, 2025

The Michigan Senate today passed legislation creating a Prescription Drug Affordability Board (PDAB), giving a new government body the board authority to investigate the price of pharmaceuticals and set price caps.

Why it matters: Although the MI Chamber shares bill sponsors’ goal of improving the affordability of prescription drugs and health care more generally, we believe the Michigan Legislature resist the temptation to impose price controls and interfere with the free market. In the case of a PDAB, it could negatively impact consumers and the future of critical medicines. Further, it has proven to be very costly for the state and taxpayers in states that have chosen to enact a PDAB.

  • Senate Bills (SB) 3-5, which passed the Senate by a vote of 20-17 with only one Republican voting ‘yes,’ is a priority for Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks (D-Grand Rapids).

What we’re saying: We will continue to voice our opposition to SBs 3-5 as the bills advance to the MI House.
