New state law requires workplace poster on veteran’s benefits, services

Advocacy News – Jan. 29, 2025

What happened: Governor Whitmer has signed a new law intending to “make it convenient for Michigan veterans to find the benefits and services they need” by requiring employers to have a workplace posting with information on veteran’s benefits and services in the state.

Why it matters: As of 2023, Michigan had over 441,000 veterans. Proponents of the bill say when these veterans transition from military life back into civilian life many have difficulty finding available services and benefits to assist them. The bill would require employers to display information that would assist Michigan veterans with finding such services and benefits.

What the bill does: Beginning March 31, 2025, any business that employs one or more employees must display a poster at the employer’s place of business, in a conspicuous place accessible to the employer’s employees, that includes, but is not limited to, information related to all of the following services that are available to veterans:

  • The telephone number and website for the department of military and veterans affairs.
  • Mental health and substance abuse services.
  • Education, workforce, or job training resources.
  • Tax benefits.
  • Obtaining a veteran designation on a driver license or official state personal identification card.
  • Eligibility for unemployment benefits.
  • Legal services.
  • The telephone number and website for the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Veterans Affairs’ veterans crisis line.

What’s next: The new law requires posters are available in a downloadable format on LEO’s website, but it may make sense for your business to consider the Michigan Chamber’s all-in-one solution for your labor law poster needs.
