New Law Ensures Industrial Processing Machinery is Tax Exempt

Advocacy News

Earlier this summer, the Michigan Legislature sent two bills to the Governor for a subsequent signature, to ensure machinery utilized for industrial processing is exempt from sales and use tax. Now Public Acts 27 and 30, sponsored by Senator Joe Bellino and Representative Greg VanWoerkom, respectively, were bills pushed in by Michigan House Republicans in legislative negotiations with House Democratic leadership.

The Michigan Chamber monitored and proudly advocated for this package of bills as strong manufacturing and aggregate production are dire to the state’s infrastructure and road construction. Before this legislation was passed, industrial processing machinery that produces a product subject to the sales tax is exempt from sales and use tax upon purchase but was not afforded to machinery used to create outputs subject to the use tax. The Michigan Chamber applauds the legislature and governor for working together to make this legislation law.
