New House Oversight Committee to hold government accountable and shape future policy

Advocacy News – March 7, 2025

What’s new: As the legislative session gears up, one of the activities the MI Chamber will be closely monitoring is the new House Oversight Committee chaired by Rep. Jay DeBoyer.

  • The committee will consist of six subcommittees, including Weaponization of State Government, Child Welfare System, Corporate Subsidies, Public Health and Food Security, Homeland Security and Foreign Influence, and State and Local Public Assistance Programs.
  • The committee will have subpoena power.

Why it matters: The committee will focus on holding government departments accountable, representing a new approach to how the legislature has interacted with state governmental departments in recent years. Members are actively seeking input on issues and situations affecting Michigan businesses that need addressing.

What we’re saying: The MI Chamber has been active in voicing concern over the lack of a stakeholder process or input in bureaucratic decision-making.

What’s next: This committee has the potential to bring some of these challenges to light in the public arena and set the stage for potential future policymaking. It is critical we hear from members to help inform our outreach and messaging to lawmakers as the Oversight Committee gets underway.
