Event News – Nov. 10, 2023
What’s happening: The Michigan Chamber Foundation proudly announces the first-round of the National Civics Bee is beginning next week! Open to all Michigan middle school students from public, private, charter, and home schools. Don’t miss this opportunity to take part in the first-round civics essay competition, beginning Monday November 13th through January 8th, 2024. This is a great way for teachers, students, and parents to come together to learn about civic engagement and participate in this first-of-its-kind event in Michigan.
How it works: The Michigan Chamber Foundation is partnering with six local chambers of commerce to host local civics bees across the state. Essays are submitted via one of the following participating local chambers. NOTE: Don’t worry if there isn’t a chamber in your specific community, just pick the nearest one!
- Battle Creek Area Chamber
- Canton Chamber of Commerce
- Chaldean Community Foundation
- Grand Rapids Chamber
- Jackson County Chamber of Commerce
- Southwest Michigan Regional Chamber
What’s next: Following a thorough evaluation by an esteemed panel of judges, the top 20 students from each of the six above chambers will advance to a live community quiz event taking place between February and April of 2024.
From there, the top three finishers from each local chamber – or 18 total students – will move on to Michigan’s inaugural National Civics Bee slated for July 2024 in our state’s capitol building and capital city of Lansing with a chance to compete in the Championship Bee in Washington, D.C. next fall.
Finalists and top winners will receive various prizes, including cash awards.
