Last week, the Michigan PFAS Action Response Team (MPART) and the Environmental Rules Review Committee received a report from the PFAS Science Advisory Workgroup on their recommended health-based standards for PFAS in drinking water. Not surprisingly, the science advisory workgroup proposed some of the most conservative standards in the nation. During the presentation, members of the the advisory workgroup noted that, as more data is collected on PFAS, the numbers keep trending down. Now that MPART has accepted these recommendations, the department can begin to develop a formal rule to set drinking water standards for PFAS. The department will now begin meeting with stakeholders to discuss the recommended numbers and their potential impact on those stakeholders. The state hopes to have a final proposed rule by October 1, 2019.
The Michigan Chamber will be discussing these recommendations with members so we can provide the department with feedback as the rulemaking process begins.
