Agreement between Michigan and Ontario Governments to Boost Cross-Border Economic Security, Growth

Advocacy News – July 26, 2023

On Tuesday, Governor Whitmer and Premier of Ontario Doug Ford signed an agreement of understanding between the two governments around shared economic priorities. In doing so, Ontario and Michigan build upon their longstanding relationship through a new partnership designed to increase trade, attract investment and encourage job creation in both jurisdictions.

Why it matters: The new Economic Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) will support joint initiatives in key areas like automotive and related supply chains. These initiatives could include joint trade promotion and missions, new post-secondary exchange programs and efforts to identify opportunities for strategic partnerships that will help businesses compete internationally.

The Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) and the Michigan Chamber of Commerce (MCC) jointly commended the signing aimed at fostering increased economic collaboration and growth across the border. This agreement represents a significant milestone in advancing the interests of businesses, workers and communities on both sides of the border.

“What’s good for Ontario is good for Michigan and what’s good for Michigan is good for Ontario. We commend Premier Doug Ford and Minister Victor Fedeli and for their leadership in recognizing the potential of this partnership,” said Rocco Rossi, President and CEO of the OCC. “By capitalizing on the diverse strengths of both Ontario and Michigan, this agreement can accelerate economic recovery, attract new investments, and create more resilient supply chains that will benefit businesses and workers alike.”

What we have to say: “As our state and global economy face transformational changes, continued collaboration and partnerships like this are crucial in ensuring we can harness strong, sustainable economic opportunities while meeting challenges,” said Jim Holcomb, President and CEO of the MCC. “We hope this MOU can spur a positive impact on job growth and prosperity in our respective areas and look forward to working with Gov. Whitmer and our Ontario partners on strengthening our shared region.”
