House oversight committee sets priorities for accountability and reform

Advocacy News – Aug. 28, 2025

What’s new: The House Oversight Committee requested updates from the Chairs of all 6 oversight sub-committees to determine the priorities of the Committee moving forward.

Why it matters: When Speaker Hall took control at the beginning of the year, he stressed that a priority of the House of Representatives would be government accountability. His resolve on this issue has been demonstrated through the budgeting process in its review of appropriations, the policy aspect by creating a Rules Committee to review all regulatory powers of State Agencies and the Oversight Committee to hold government accountable and get answer to questions they have.

  • Through the first half of the year the sub-committee have held over 60 meetings calling in department officials, outside experts and auditor general.  There are six subcommittees, including Weaponization of State Government, Child Welfare System, Corporate Subsidies, Public Health and Food Security, Homeland Security and Foreign Influence, and State and Local Public Assistance Programs.

The Committee members are still actively seeking input on issues and situations affecting Michigan businesses that need addressing.

What’s Next: This committee is committed to continuing its mission and legislation goals to address a number of issues identified. It is critical we hear from members to help inform our outreach and messaging to lawmakers as the Oversight Committee gears up for the remainder of the year.
