Help support Michigan communities, elections as a poll worker

What’s happening: Michigan communities are beginning recruitment efforts for poll workers ahead of upcoming elections – and the Michigan Chamber Foundation, with support from the Erb Family and Skillman Foundations – is launching a new nonpartisan initiative to help support local clerks and expand awareness of these opportunities statewide.

  • The new Support MI Clerks connects interested individuals with local election officials, shares clear information about the elections process and helps make it easier to sign up locally.

Interested? Join or host an upcoming informational session to learn more about becoming a poll worker and what the role entails.

Why it matters: Poll workers play a critical role in helping local clerks administer secure, efficient and accessible elections. But many communities continue to face recruitment challenges, especially during high-turnout election cycles like 2026.

The opportunity for employers: Support MI Clerks is offering free, short presentations for businesses, chambers and community organizations interested in helping inform employees and members about:

  • What poll workers do
  • Time commitments and training
  • Compensation opportunities
  • How to sign up locally

Presentations can be tailored to your organization and needs, offered virtually or in person, and typically take 15 minutes or less.

What to know:

  • Poll workers are paid for their service
  • Training is provided locally
  • Most registered Michigan voters are eligible to serve
  • Many communities also allow qualified high school students to participate

The takeaway: Serving as a poll worker is one meaningful way Michiganders and employers can support their communities, advance civics and help local elections run smoothly.
