Advocacy News – June 12, 2026
What’s happening: The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) is accepting public comment Thursday, June 18 at 6 p.m. on the reissuance of two water discharge permits associated with the Great Lakes Tunnel Project.
The permits were originally approved in 2021 following extensive environmental review and public input but must be renewed after expiring during years of legal delays.
Why it matters: The Great Lakes Tunnel Project would relocate the existing Line 5 pipeline into a concrete-lined tunnel beneath the Straits of Mackinac, reducing potential risk of a spill to virtually zero while preserving a critical source of energy for Michigan residents, businesses and communities.
The project has undergone years of technical review and remains one of the most thoroughly studied infrastructure projects in the state.
What we’re saying: The MI Chamber continues to strongly support construction of the Great Lakes Tunnel as a balanced solution that advances affordable and reliable energy while protecting vital water resources. The extensive review, analysis and public engagement already completed demonstrates that these permits can and should be renewed, maintaining key protections for the Great Lakes and Straits of Mackinac.
- EGLE previously determined the proposed project would not impact water quality, and the proposed permit renewal includes additional monitoring requirements and discharge restrictions that further strengthen safeguards.
What you can do: If you support modernizing Michigan’s energy infrastructure while protecting the Great Lakes, consider participating in the public comment process and sharing your perspective.
