Advocacy News – Jan. 15, 2026
Rising health care costs continue to strain Michigan employers, an issue that was front and center at the Michigan Chamber’s Health, Human Resources & Talent (HHRT) Committee meeting Jan. 15. Committee members heard directly from stakeholders, including health plans and hospital representatives, on what is driving premium increases — and, critically, what policy solutions the MI Chamber can advocate for to help rein in costs.
Why it matters: Healthcare costs are growing faster than inflation and wages. According to the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS), proposed premium increases for 2026 include:
- 20.2% for individuals purchasing coverage on the federal marketplace
- 11% for small employers
- Nearly 9% for large, self-funded employers
These increases come on top of sustained national trends showing employers are increasingly dissatisfied with their health plans as premiums, deductibles and out-of-pocket costs climb.
What’s next: While there are no silver bullet solutions to this complex problem, the takeaway from the January meeting was clear: doing nothing is not an option for Michigan’s business community because purchasers need policy solutions to stabilize premiums and reduce volatility for healthcare purchasers.
- The next HHRT Committee meeting is scheduled for Feb. 11. MI Chamber members interested in engaging on this issue and others are encouraged to join the Committee.
