Governor’s Missed Opportunity

In response to Governor Whitmer’s press conference on Monday, April 13, 2020:

State government can protect public health and jobs. The problem for Michiganders is Governor Whitmer’s current stay-at-home order is one of the most overly restrictive and burdensome orders in the country. In her news conference on Monday, April 13 the Governor missed the opportunity to make positive, common sense changes to her order to allow businesses that can operate safely to re-open so employees who were thrown out of work by state government can return work.

Another problem with the Governor’s order is the absence of state review and prior approval of the growing number of conflicting and confusing local ordinances. Governor Whitmer is reluctant to take steps to safely re-open Michigan’s economy. It’s more apparent with each day that passes, other states like Ohio, Florida and Texas are doing a much better job protecting lives and livelihoods. Chamber members are urged to contact their State Rep and State Senator to demand that state government take prudent action now to allow employers to responsibly reopen in May, not later this summer or fall.
