Advocacy News – January 28, 2021
Last night, Governor Whitmer gave her third State of the State address virtually, a first in Michigan’s history.
What does the business community need to know about yesterday’s speech and the Governor’s vision for 2021? Here is a summary of key issues raised last night:
- The Governor called on the legislature to pass her COVID Recovery Agenda.
- Note: the plan calls for a permanent extension of unemployment benefits to 26 weeks from 20. The Chamber opposes this measure.
- As in past addresses, roads were a hot topic. The Governor proposed a Strengthening Local Roads and Bridges proposal that appears to emphasize more local road funding options.
- The Governor called on the Legislature to bring back the Good Jobs for Michigan program which is an economic development tool to attract major employers to Michigan.
- Water infrastructure upgrades was also a major topic of her speech. The Governor proposes spending $500 million in comprehensive water infrastructure investment.
- Vaccine distribution is the best weapon we have to combat the detrimental effects of COVID-19 and the Governor made it clear in her speech that she is focused on vaccine distribution.
The Governor’s speech was on the short side and focused on sending a positive message after such a tough year. Her entire speech can be read here.
