The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) released a new I-9 form, Aug. 1. While employers may continue to use the current version of the I-9 for now, use of the new I-9 will be required starting Nov. 1.
Why it matters: All US employers must properly complete an I-9 for citizens and noncitizens they hire for employment in the US. It is used to verify the person’s identity and employment authorization. The new I-9 includes significant changes to the form and instructions, including a reduction of Sections 1 and 2 to one page and a checkbox for employers enrolled in E-Verify to indicate they remotely examined identity and employment authorization documents under a newly authorized alternative procedure.
