The Michigan Chamber, Grand Rapids Chamber, Small Business Association and Detroit Regional Chamber send Governor Whitmer a letter last week urging her to allow the remaining businesses still closed in much of the state to reopen.
The letter suggests if industries like restaurants, public swimming pools, casinos and others can find a way to safely open in some capacity, the state can also find a way to safely open gyms, theaters, bowling alleys and other industries.
Michigan remains one of only a handful of states that has not allowed these sectors to open in any capacity, while still facing property tax bills, rent, payroll and other expenses. This has placed businesses in extreme hardship, resulting in permanent closures and layoffs.
The letter also encourages the Governor to work with stakeholders to find a solution to the issue of property tax deferral for these severely impacted industries and to work with Legislature to pass legislation assuring that employers in all sectors who take reasonable steps to follow public health guidelines will be protected against needless COVID-19 related lawsuits.
