Advocacy News – Oct. 23, 2026
What’s happening: The Michigan Chamber has joined a national coalition urging Congress to advance the bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act of 2026 (S. 5653), aimed at speeding up federal permitting decisions while maintaining environmental protections.
The legislation would streamline and modernize permitting and legal review processes. It reflects years of bipartisan negotiations and stakeholder engagement.
Why it matters: Lengthy, unpredictable permitting processes can discourage investment, stall projects and increase costs – challenges businesses are facing at both the federal and state levels.
The Michigan experience: At the state level, a recent Michigan Auditor General report found that the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) failed to process nearly 75% of certain sampled permit applications within legally required timeframes. The audit also found delays in initial application reviews.
These findings reinforce the need for permitting systems that deliver timely, consistent decisions without sacrificing environmental safeguards.
The bottom line: Michigan needs more affordable, reliable energy, stronger infrastructure and continued business investment. Modernizing permitting at the federal, state and local levels can help make that possible – reducing unnecessary delays, supporting good-paying jobs and strengthening Michigan’s competitiveness.
The Chamber will continue advocating for practical reforms that make it easier to build, expand and invest in our state.
