What happened: On Dec. 11, President Trump issued an executive order directing the Attorney General and Secretary of Commerce to identify and challenge state-level artificial intelligence (AI) regulations that conflict with the White House’s national AI policy objectives. The order also calls for the creation of a uniform federal policy framework for AI that would preempt state laws.
Why it matters: The global race for AI leadership is accelerating. To maintain economic competitiveness and safeguard national security, the United States must lead in AI innovation. A federal approach is best when it comes to strengthening our ability to compete internationally, drive innovation and attract investment.
What we’re saying: The Michigan Chamber has consistently advocated for a national AI policy framework to ensure consistent standards for AI development, deployment and regulation nationwide. Without federal action, states will enact their own AI laws, creating a patchwork of regulations that could lead to confusion, compliance challenges and higher costs for businesses and developers.
