Building a strong legal strategy for Michigan employers

Advocacy News – May 7, 2026

What’s happening: The MI Chamber is working to step up its legal advocacy to better protect job providers and Michigan’s business climate.

Why it matters: Legal decisions increasingly shape the rules and conditions employers must operate under. For years, Michigan had a model Supreme Court that operated under the rule of law. However, over the last decade the state’s high court has morphed into activism and ranking Michigan as a top “judicial hellhole.” Greater engagement in the process and courts is essential to ensure fairness, predictability and balance.

What we’re doing:

  • Hosted two legal roundtables this quarter, convening member attorneys and policy leaders to assess risks and opportunities in Michigan’s legal environment
  • Identifying ways to engage more strategically in the courts – including stronger case monitoring, tracking legal trends and expanded use of amicus briefs
  • Advancing a coordinated approach alongside the Michigan Alliance for Legal Reform (MAFLR) to bring greater transparency, accountability and balance to the legal system
  • Evaluating resources and funding strategies needed to scale this work and ensure sustained impact

What we’re hearing:

  • The business community must play a more active, organized role in legal engagement
  • Earlier awareness and visibility into cases and trends is critical
  • Strategic, well-supported amicus efforts can influence outcomes and protect against harmful precedent

What’s next:

  • Convene another legal roundtable this summer to deepen engagement and formalize a regular cadence
  • Build a long-term strategy – including funding – to expand the MI Chamber’s presence and work on behalf of members and employers on addressing pressing legal issues
