Michigan champion honored for civic leadership

What’s new: Michigan’s 2024 National Civics Bee winner was honored, Feb. 11, with a legislative tribute of recognition by House Democratic Leader Rep. Puri on the floor of the House of Representatives.

Why it matters: Civic engagement is the cornerstone of the National Civics Bee, and Evan was invited to join the leader during the House’s legislative session where bills and resolutions were deliberated on the House floor.

What they’re saying: In Leader Puri’s address to the body of the House of Representatives, he shared:

The National Civics Bee is more than a competition, it is a movement that empowers young minds to engage with the challenges facing their communities. Evan’s success reminds us that civic engagement starts at an early age, and that young leaders like him are shaping the future with purpose and vision.

Evan, your dedication to improving your community through civic action is inspiring, you have set an incredible example, and we know this is just the beginning.

What’s next: The 2025 National Civics Bee is underway, as Michigan students submitted nearly 750 essays from all corners of the state. Evan is focusing on mentoring the next group of Michigan students who compete at the state finals in July at Heritage Hall in Michigan’s State Capitol.
