Advocacy News – Feb. 12, 2026
Michigan is in position to compete for significant private-sector investment in data centers – projects that could support high-wage jobs and long-term economic growth, expand local tax bases and strengthen our digital infrastructure that underpins modern industries.
What’s happening: To ensure policymakers and communities have clear, Michigan-specific information as they evaluate these opportunities, the Michigan Chamber Foundation is launching a new research initiative project focused on data center development and investment.
This effort will provide objective analysis to inform ongoing discussions and help ensure the debate is grounded in facts, not fears, and for Michigan to effectively compete with other states pursuing similar projects.
We are seeking partners to contribute expertise, insights and resources to this effort to ensure the research is comprehensive, credible and strategically useful.
The big picture: Data centers power critical sectors, including advanced manufacturing, mobility, artificial intelligence, healthcare innovation, and national security – the very future of work and the tools and services we all rely on. At the same time, the Michigan Chamber recognizes that their development raises important questions around workforce needs, energy usage, environmental impact and local infrastructure. This Foundation’s research will examine:
- The economic impact of data center investment in Michigan
- Workforce, environmental and energy considerations
- How Michigan compares with competitor states
- Policy frameworks that balance keeping Michigan competitive and investment-ready with community priorities
Bottom line: Michigan has a real opportunity to attract and retain transformative data center investment. But sound decisions require sound data. This project is designed to provide just that.
