Michigan moves toward next gen nuclear energy

Advocacy News – Oct. 30, 2025

What’s new: With bipartisan support, the Michigan House approved a package of bills this week to advance small modular reactor (SMR) technology, a new, scalable form of nuclear energy designed to be safer, smaller and more efficient for both new and existing facilities in the state.

  • House Bills 4124-4129 were voted out of the House Energy Committee last March. The bills have sat on the House floor for several months until getting voted on by the full Chamber this week.

Why it matters: The bills woulds establish:

    • R&D tax credits to drive innovation in next-generation reactor technology.
    • Production tax credits to ensure that the companies pioneering this technology do it here in Michigan.
    • Higher education and workforce grants to help colleges and universities create specialized training programs — and to support workers who complete them and build their careers in Michigan.

The bottom line: Bill sponsors say the legislation positions Michigan to be a leader in clean, reliable, next-generation energy production.

What we’re saying: The Michigan Chamber has long championed the need for durable, long-term energy planning and regulatory certainty. We support this package as it moves to the Michigan Senate — because access to clean, affordable and reliable energy is essential to Michigan businesses and communities.
