CALL TO ACTION: Governor Whitmer may Veto COVID-19 Related Property Tax Relief

July 7, 2020

The Michigan Chamber is picking up reports that Governor Whitmer may veto recently passed legislation that extends the due date for summer 2020 property taxes for businesses and some residents negatively impacted by COVID-19.

We are asking you to please contact the Governor and tell her to support this much needed relief.  For your convenience, we have created a message for you to send her directly.   And of course, feel free to personalize your message.

Message:

Dear Governor Whitmer,

Please support HB 5761 and HB 5810 to help struggling businesses negatively impacted by the coronavirus.  These bills will simply give businesses and/or individuals more time to pay their property taxes after being forced to close or extremely limit their capacity.

The summer property tax bill is one of the most significant expenses a business incurs throughout the year.  For some businesses, like my own, the inability to pay the upcoming property tax bill could be what forces us to permanently close.  If given more time to pay, businesses will be able to rebound and reopen more quickly, getting our state back on the track to economic prosperity.

Please support businesses, individuals, local governments and schools by signing HB 5761 and HB 5810.

Thank you.

Background:

Due to the Governor’s unilateral shutdown orders, it has been over an entire calendar quarter that several businesses across Michigan have been closed or have had their operations severely restricted.  It is no surprise that these businesses are going to face extreme difficulty if not impossibility in paying what is in some cases the largest annual expense they face.  For some businesses this could be the final tipping point on whether they survive or not.

HB 5761 and HB 5810 provides a 6-month interest and penalty free extension to pay the summer 2020 property taxes.  If after 6-months a business finds themselves needing more time to pay this obligation they will have the opportunity to enter into a generously low-cost installment plan for additional months.

Please contact the Governor today and tell her how important this legislation is to you and your business.  If you have any addition questions please feel free to contact Dan Papineau, Director of Tax Policy& Regulatory Affairs at (517) 371-7669.
