SB 943 (MacGregor) would allow a business to apply for relief from the State of Michigan for the penalties and interest that accumulate on unpaid 2020 summer property taxes through February.
Earlier this year, Governor Whitmer vetoed a Chamber led initiative to provide struggling businesses more time to pay their summer 2020 property taxes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The measure would have applied to all businesses that were negatively impacted by forced shutdowns and occupancy restrictions giving them almost a year before the taxes would be due. SB 943 represents a massively scaled down relief measure the Governor might approve that is a last-ditch effort to help those who missed the payment.
It is unknown whether the Governor will sign the bill as Treasury has indicated they are opposed to the legislation and the bill has received very few votes from Democratic lawmakers.
