The Michigan Chamber issued the following statement after the Michigan Senate passed legislation today expanding the Michigan Consumer Protection Act (MCPA), exposing every regulated business and profession in Michigan to costly lawsuits (SB 134):
“We are extremely disappointed with the Senate’ s passage of Senate Bill 134, legislation to repeal Michigan’s longstanding current regulatory compliance exemption under Michigan’s Consumer Protection Act,” said Wendy Block, senior vice president of business advocacy for the Michigan Chamber. “This unfortunately partisan bill would expose all state-regulated businesses and professions — including doctors, lawyers, banks, auto dealers, casinos, insurers, utilities, and more — to frivolous and abusive litigation, class action lawsuits, treble damages, and inconsistent judgments from courts and regulators. While this bill may be good for plaintiff attorneys and their pocketbooks, it’s bad for small businesses and our state’s economic climate and competitiveness.”
