Unemployment Agency Acknowledges ‘Charging’ Issues for COVID Claims

July 28, 2020

The Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) has acknowledged they have a system issue that has resulted in employers being charged for unemployment insurance (UI) benefits due to COVID-19 when they shouldn’t be.  This issue was covered in the Chamber’s Advocacy News last week.

UIA sent the following email yesterday:  “UIA is updating the process of benefit charging for contributing and reimbursing employers in order to comply with the Governor’s Executive Order 2020-76. Employers will not be charged for employees collecting benefits due to a layoff, leave of absence, temporary shutdown, or reduced work hours for the weeks ending 3/21/2020 through the end of the Executive Order (currently the week of 8/15/2020).  Benefits charges for those weeks will be charged to the NBA account.  We understand the discrepancies in your current billing. Your accounts will be updated and a new billing statement will be issued once our system updates are completed.”

If you see an error on your billing statement, we would encourage that you notify the UIA of the error immediately via your MIWAM account.  We advise you to do so because we are unclear how the UIA would know about the billing discrepancy unless notified.

Please let Wendy Block at the MI Chamber know if you have any questions at wblock@michamber.com.
