Many employers hire part-time workers during the summer months. Often, these are high school and college students. Should you do background checks on them similar to those for older adults seeking full-time employment? The answer is YES!
Although many courts restrict public access to criminal records involving youthful offenders, you could discover a criminal history that might impact your hiring decision. And if this person is driving a personal or company vehicle (such as a van that transports kids attending a summer camp), he/she must have a valid driver’s license that your insurance carrier finds acceptable.
These summer workers must authorize the background check in writing and, before they do that, you must disclose to them your intention to procure the background check. Please note that background checks can and should be done on volunteers, as well.
