Jim Fitterling, CEO — DOW, Midland

Dow combines science and technology to develop innovative solutions that are essential to human progress. We are the leading integrated materials science company focused on three, fast-growing end-use markets: packaging, infrastructure and consumer care. I’ve enjoyed a long and fulfilling career at Dow and today, I have the honor of leading this great company and its nearly 40,000 talented and committed employees. Our ambition is to become the world’s most innovative, customer-centric, inclusive, and sustainable material sciences company in the world.

Dow and DuPont combined to form DowDuPont in a merger of equals in September of 2017, with the intent to create three separate companies. Currently, we are preparing for Dow to separate from DowDuPont on April 1, 2019. The new Dow will be more committed to Michigan than ever before. Our company was founded in Midland, Michigan 121 years ago and to this day we lead our global operations from Midland.

In Michigan, Dow faces many of the same challenges as our industry peers. An area of primary focus is finding highly-skilled talent to build a  globally-competitive  workforce  during a time of rapid technology advancement and digitalization. This challenge is solvable, and Dow is proud to be a leader in helping move Michigan forward, particularly in the area of STEM education and upskilling our workforce. As a company, we have tackled this challenge head-on by building collaborative and highly successful public/ private partnerships with local high schools and colleges, and with the state’s leading universities.

Michigan is the land of opportunity. Our world-class research universities and second-to-none community colleges are helping to build the future workforce that  is the bedrock of innovation-based companies like Dow. Michigan’s economy has made tremendous strides in recent years. For example, the “MI Thrive” and “Good Jobs for Michigan” legislation, which Dow was proud to support, has provided some of the tools necessary to make our communities a more attractive place for large companies to locate and invest.

The challenges facing Michigan cannot be solved by a single company or organization. For more than a century, Dow has partnered with groups and organizations across the state to help create a brighter, more prosperous future for Michigan companies and its citizens. We take seriously our responsibility to use our voice to shape discussions of public policy with a focus on respect for people and civility in our public discourse. The Michigan Chamber of Commerce shares those values. Since its founding in 1959, the Michigan Chamber has been the leading voice of the business community in the political, legislative, and regulatory process. The Chamber’s effectiveness comes from its focus on promoting conditions that are favorable to job creation in Michigan and helping solve its members’ legislative and regulatory challenges. We support the Chamber and its commitment to making Michigan more competitive for businesses of all sizes to invest, grow, and hire more people as we work together to move Michigan forward.

Dow is a company on the move, and we’re in the midst of our latest reinvention. The ability to adapt to change has enabled us to consistently grow and, more importantly, has advanced our ability to provide job opportunities and support to our local communities.

We choose to invest in Michigan because both the U.S. and the state have a growing and vibrant research, development and manufacturing sector creating new opportunities every day. And we’re looking for the best and brightest to join the Dow team. Our workforce is diverse, inclusive and top talent is welcomed here.

Today, with more than 6,000 employees in Michigan and more than $44 billion in annual global revenue, Dow is one of the state’s largest companies. Dow’s global scale and manufacturing heritage is as much a part of this state’s history as it is Michigan’s future. We look forward to the next growth era of our company, our state, and our communities where we invest, engage, and innovate.
