Advanced Communications & Data , Lansing — Basically, Anyone is Our Customer

“Internet service is just about as important as electricity,” said Kevin Schoen, President of Advanced Communications & Data (ACD), Lansing. “If it doesn’t work, you’re effectively out of business these days.”

ACD owns and operates telecom, infrastructure, fiber-optic networks, wireless systems and provides services to all types of customers – from large telecom carriers, local units of government and schools to large, medium and small businesses. ACD also services residential customers. “So basically, anybody is our customer,” said Schoen.

“I have a passion for what I do and ACD has a lot of great employees,” said Schoen. His team of 130 employees work with one goal in mind – to build more effective and reliable networks. “In order to do that, we have to build a lot of new infrastructure and new networks and it’s critical that we have extremely strong interactions with governments.”

“A lot of the challenges in our business concern contracting with municipal entities, local governments and road commissions when we have to put in our fiber infrastructure and our wireless systems in the public utility right-of-way,” explained Schoen.

“Under the Engler Administration, a series of laws were passed to standardize the deployment of fiber and other broadband infrastructure across all municipalities,” noted Schoen. “That’s really what got a number of independent high-tech operators going into Michigan in the early 2000s – and ACD was one of the them. The Chamber fought for the passage of those laws. That was huge for us,” said Schoen.

“The Michigan Chamber is the only statewide business organization that is a champion for business,” said Schoen. “We rely on the Chamber to iron out our issues effectively at the state level. Having representation through the Chamber is critically important.”
