Michigan will become among the least prosperous states in the nation if it doesn’t shift its emphasis from manufacturing jobs, according to a new report. Michigan now ranks 39th in personal income per capita — down from 16th in 1999 — and is poised to tumble further if it doesn’t change course.

“We’re excited to bring this event to Michigan – this is a great way for students, teachers and parents to come together and help enhance civic engagement and civility,” said MI Chamber President & CEO Jim Holcomb. “Informed, active citizens are the heart of thriving communities and economies. We’re stronger together.”

Michigan has a population problem. That’s undisputable. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Growing Michigan Together Council was created to help formulate policies to reverse this challenging trend where Michigan had the 49th slowest rate of population growth among 50 states. That’s laudable. We share that vision.
