House Democrats Propose Plan to Drive Up Gas Prices and Hurt State's Economy

February 11, 2016

The Michigan Chamber of Commerce today issued the following statement in response to the House Democrats’ plan to halt safe and reliable energy exploration in Michigan, including hydraulic fracturing or “fracking.”

“Unhappy with safe, reliable energy exploration, lower gas prices and affordable natural gas, House Democrats plan to introduce bills that would raise energy prices and endanger thousands of Michigan jobs,” said Michigan Chamber President & CEO Rich Studley. “Their message to 30,000 employees whose jobs depend on Michigan’s oil and gas industry is, ‘You’re fired!’”

“Three petition drives to ban fracking have failed to gain voter support in Michigan,” Studley added. “House Democrats now want to impose a moratorium on energy exploration that voters have repeatedly declined to sign.”

“Michigan’s oil and gas industry has used safe and reliable methods of energy exploration for nearly 60 years without environmental incident or threat to the public health,” noted Studley. “Current state regulation of oil and gas exploration in Michigan is rigorous and is widely viewed as a national model for effective environmental protection.”

“We urge responsible state lawmakers to reject this election year political stunt to pander to environmental extremists at the expense of motorists, homeowners and Michigan’s economy,” Studley concluded.
