Governor Whitmer Tightens Restrictions in Northern Michigan, Allows Detroit Casinos to Open

Yesterday, Governor Whitmer signed Executive Order 2020-160 and Executive Order 2020-161, amending Michigan’s Safe Start Order and issuing revised workplace safeguards.
Minutes after issuing Executive Order 160, the Governor decided to issue Exec Order 161 amending workplace standards for businesses and rescinding Order 145. Order 161 (19 pages) is effective immediately with no public hearing, debate or vote by lawmakers.
Here is what you need to know:

Starting July 31, 2020, statewide indoor gatherings will be limited to 10 people and certain bars will be closed for indoor service across the state.  While this was the case previously for most of Michigan, the new order applies these restrictions to Regions 6 and 8, northern lower Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. Outdoor gatherings are still restricted to 100 people unless located within Regions 6 and 8.  For these regions outdoor gatherings are limited to 250 people.

Remote work, which previously looked to be strongly encouraged is now being required if an employee can perform their duties remotely.

Detroit casinos will be allowed to open on August 5, but their occupancy will be limited to 15% capacity. Casinos must also, among other things, conduct a daily entry screening protocol for customers and employees.  Casinos must require patrons to wear a face covering, except while eating or drinking or for identification purposes.

Information around this outbreak is changing rapidly. The latest information is available at Michigan.gov/Coronavirus and CDC.gov/Coronavirus.
