Donor Privacy Legislation Heads to Governor

December 20, 2018

Legislation that prohibits public agencies from requesting the names of donors of any 501(c) organization has been sent to the Governor for his signature. People have a right to associate and support causes and beliefs that they feel strongly about.

As seen in other states and local units of government, personal information of donors to certain causes have been used to harass and shame individuals out of supporting their preferred nonprofit. Whether it is the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the Sierra Club, or the Michigan Chamber, people have a right to come together in support of issues important to them without fear of becoming a target.
