Bumpy Ride Ahead for MI Businesses If Proposed Tax Increases are Passed

July 18, 2019

Michigan businesses, especially those in the trucking industry, are in for a bumpy ride if state lawmakers pass proposed new tax increases.

House Democrats recently proposed a series of devastating business tax increases on all Michigan employers. The trucking industry, however, has the largest target on its back when it comes to increasing taxes.

Here are two tax proposals of particular concern:

  • House Bill 4779 would create the Commercial Motor Carrier Road Tax and subject commercial vehicles to a 6-cent-per-mile tax.
  • House Bill 4780 would allow the State to charge commercial vehicles a toll to cross certain bridges on Michigan’s state trunk lines.

We encourage Chamber members to join our fight to defeat these proposed devastating tax increases. Contact Dan Papineau, Director of Tax Policy & Regulatory Affairs, at dpapineau@michamber.com to learn more.
