Legislation to Help Reduce False Tax Filings On Way to Governor's Desk

April 16, 2018

Legislation to help combat identity theft and reduce false tax filings has been sent to the Governor for his signature. House Bill 5091 changes the annual date by which a person must file an income tax withholding statement and an annual reconciliation return with the Michigan Department of Treasury from February 28 to January 31.

The bill also requires returns or reports made by employers with 250 employees or more to be made electronically. Approximately 30 states and the federal government have already made the change.

Governor Snyder is expected to sign the bill; the change will be in effect for the 2018 tax year.
