Bill To End Wasteful and Ineffective Film Subsidy Scheduled for Public Hearing

February 22, 2015

The Michigan House Tax Policy committee has scheduled a hearing regarding House Bill 4122 - recently introduced by State Representative Dan Lauwers and 11 co-sponsors – to finally put an end to Hollywood film subsidies. The Michigan Chamber applauds this effort and agrees with Rep. Lauwers that this program makes no sense.

The Film Incentive program currently costs Michigan taxpayers $50 million a year and even the state’s own economic development agency (MEDC) reported this costly subsidy failed in 2013 to create one permanent job. Repeal of this wasteful and counterproductive film subsidy is long overdue and the Chamber is urging the Legislature to take fast action on this important bill.
