Michigan House Planning to Raise Property Taxes!
This week (possibly as early as tomorrow), the House of Representatives will consider House Bill 4313, a bill that would allow for the levy of billions of dollars more in property taxes by expanding the definition of allowable uses of school sinking funds. The Michigan Chamber of Commerce is standing up for homeowners and job providers alike to voice strong opposition to this tax increase.
With unemployment rising above 11%, and homeowners paying higher taxes on lower property values, this property tax increase is completely irresponsible. All of our children deserve equitable school funding, but passage of HB 4313 will ensure that Michigan returns to the old inequitable system of school finance where the rich districts get richer.
School lobbyists and administrators are working overtime to convince legislators that, despite record funding, they don't have enough money. The truth is, since 1994, school enrollment is up 2% but school funding for operations is up 99% and school debt funding (like sinking funds) is up 269%! It seems logical that administrators should be able to run their districts without trying a sneak attack on taxpayer's wallets. Instead of asking taxpayers for more money, we are urging legislators to focus on real reforms; measures that will raise student achievement and ensure our schools are run efficiently and with transparency.
YOU HAVE THE CHANCE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE! We urge you to contact your state representative immediately and ask him/her to stand up for you and vote "NO" on HB 4313. Your voice matters, but only if you let it be heard. If you don't contact your legislator and ask them to protect you from this harmful tax increase, the only information they will have is from those wanting to raise your taxes and spend your money.
Please take a moment to send a letter to your state representative and tell him/her them that now is not the time to raise property taxes.
