Urge Michigan Legislature to Repeal Job-Killing Michigan Business Tax Surcharge

As you are aware, last year’s state budget and service tax fiasco resulted in a 21.99% “surcharge” to the new Michigan Business Tax. This proposal was originally developed by a trade association representing manufacturers, but opposed by the Michigan Chamber. We were successful in drastically reducing what started out as a 33% surcharge – but it is time to finish the job. We are hearing from companies across the state that they are experiencing 400, 500, and even 1000% tax increases due to the new MBT and surcharge. Obviously, this is simply untenable.

Meanwhile, the Administration has approved a massive tax break giveaway to Hollywood filmmakers who are unlikely to create permanent Michigan jobs.

It is absolutely clear to us that the job-killing surcharge is not necessary and should be repealed immediately! Doing so would save approximately $600 million for job providers, and it's clearly affordable. State Representative Dan Acciavatti (R-32, Chesterfield/House Bill 5627) and State Senators Mark Jansen (R-Grand Rapids/Senate Bill 1242) and Jud Gilbert (R-Algonac/Senate Bill 1230) have introduced legislation to repeal the surcharge.

We urge you to contact your legislators and ask them to support these bills.
